February 2012: Dental Crowns, "Money Matters" & Hot Apple Pie!

February is Heart Month!

Can taking care of your smile help to protect your heart?

While we know that oral health is related to overall health, a study in the Journal of Periodontology suggests that oral health might be more closely related to the health of your heart than you may think. Links have been found between periodontal disease and Stroke as well as Heart Diseases. Over simplified, the bacteria found in the mouths of patients with Periodontal disease may enter the bloodstream through the inflamed gum tissues. This bacterium then travels though the body, contributing to clot formations, swelling of the arteries and other factors that lead to heart complications.

To protect your smile as well as your heart we encourage you and your loved ones to practice good oral hygiene and maintain scheduled visits to our office to monitor and care for your healthy smile!

Also related to your heart, February hosts Valentine's Day (February 14) and Family Day (February 20), two holidays focused on spending time with loved ones.

Until next month, stay warm and keep smiling,

Dr. Nick Babatsikos and Team

Dental Team Picks...Movies, Books & More

Dr.Nick - Movie Review - Mission Impossible 4 - The IMF is shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name. A fantastic action packed thriller! The hotel climbing scene was the best!

Alicia's Book Review - The Help Author: Kathryn Stockett. Three ordinary women join to work on a project that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town. If you read only one book ...let this be it! I'm looking forward to the movie

Dorothy's Movie Review - The Help Written and Directed by Tate Taylor. Screenplay by Kathryn Stockett. An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960's decides to write a book detailing the African - American maid's point of view on the white families for which they work for, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. This certainly was a very powerful, entertaining and touching film, I bawled my eyes out!

Frieda's Children's Book Review - The Poky Little Puppy - Author:Janette Sebring Lowrey The sweetest little book I've read to my little boy. It's a cute story! My son keeps asking me to read it over and over again.

Lisa's Pick on a Health Club Membership -I have been going to the Columbus Centre Health Club and I absolutely love it. Two thumbs up. Excellent facility and wonderful staff!

Tanya's Movie Review - We need to Talk about Kevin Written, Directed Lynne Ramsay - This movie is about the mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief - and feelings of responsibility for her child's actions. This was one of the most disturbing movies I've seen to date . I highly recommend it, however be warned its not a "feel good" type of movie.

Crack! Was That your Tooth?

There you are watching a movie, innocently eating your popcorn...

Crack! Ouch! Uh oh? Was that your tooth?

Time to call Dr. Nick Babatsikos!

What is a Crown? A crown is a covering that sits over the top of the tooth. Crowns protect, cover, seal and strengthen your tooth. When a filling just won't do the job, we often turn to the crown.

There are many situations that may call for a crown:

Large old fillings - When large old fillings break down, or get decay around them, the tooth often needs to be crowned. It is important to crown a tooth that has been structurally weakened to prevent further damage such as cracking or breaking.

Cracked tooth – When a tooth is cracked, a crown is placed over the tooth to hold it together. If this is not done on time, the tooth can become sensitive or will eventually break. It is important to crown a cracked tooth before it breaks as broken teeth are not always repairable.

Money Matters brought to you by our very own seasoned expert Maria Tsiaousidis.

Ben Bernanke, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman recently announced that the American benchmark interest rate would stay low until at least late 2014. Here in Canada, the Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney highlighted that our economy continues to show resilience. Predicting modest growth for this year, he points to 2 per cent inflation as the economic speed limit.

It is likely that Mr. Carney will not make an interest rate adjustment unless inflation becomes an issue. As global economies work to achieve stability, the low rate policies of Canada and the U.S. should maintain mortgage rate stability for the next 12 to 18 months, unless Bond Rates begin to shift. More on that next time. Please feel free to contact me for further insight.

Hot Apple-Cinnamon Pie..."A LA MODE"!

There's nothing like warming up with some Hot Apple Pie!

With the deep freeze outside, choosing the right 'warming foods' during these winter months is key for nourishing you body and soul.

The body naturally craves, starchy, heavy and sweet foods during the winter season. Instead of reaching for processed 'foods' that leave you feeling lethargic, try making your own creations that will satisfy your craving as well as offer nutritional value.

Since apples are widely available during the winter months and there is thing better than a little cinnamon and nutmeg to warm you up, may we suggest a HOT APPLE PIE! To help add some nutrition to the recipe you may notice some ingredients that you may not have in your pantry. All of these ingredients are available in the organic section of larger grocery stores or your local specialty grocer.
