Nutrition and Healthy Teeth

Making good nutritional choices, especially if started at a young age, helps to maintain healthy teeth throughout your life.

Combining the right nutritional choices with proper dental maintenance helps to ensure good oral health.

How, you ask?

The accumulation of plaque, a film of saliva, mucus, bacteria, and food residue (particularly from food that are high in sugar and starch) that builds up on the surface of teeth, can lead to decay and gum disease.

This build up is controlled by consistent brushing and flossing combined with healthy food choices that will keep your teeth healthy.

The key to healthy teeth lays in a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, limiting unhealthy snacks, proper oral care, and seeing your dentist on a regular basis.

Money Matters brought to you by our very own seasoned expert Maria Tsiaousidis.

Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 3,690 sales through the Toronto MLS system in December 2012 – down from 4,585 sales in December 2011. Total sales for 2012 amounted to 85,731 a decrease from 89,096 transactions in 2011.

The number of transactions in 2012 was quite strong from a historic perspective. We saw strong year-over-year growth in sales in the first half of the year, but this growth was more than offset by sales declines in the second half. Stricter mortgage lending guidelines resulted in some households postponing their purchase of a home. In the City of Toronto, the dip in sales was compounded by the additional Land Transfer Tax, which buyers must pay upfront," said Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Ann Hannah.

The average selling price in December 2012 was up by 6.5 per cent year-over-year to $478,739. The average selling price for 2012 as a whole was up by almost seven per cent to $497,298.

We are already starting to see an increase in the number of new listings now available on the market. If you are looking to buy a home, don't wait too long as you may miss out on some great opportunities.

More next time on Money Matters...

Are You Throwing Away the 'Best' Part?

We wanted to take a moment to offer new meaning to some old advice your parents used to offer; "Eat your fruits and veggies!"

Fruits and vegetables are a must-have in your diet. They are rich in fiber, minerals and vitamins, (usually) low in calories, and excellent energy sources.

Here's the twist. When your parents told you to 'eat your fruits and vegetables', they were referring to the sliced, skinned and prepared portion on your plate - we are referring to 'all of the fruit and vegetable', skins, tops and stems included.

Skins, tops and stems often have higher concentrations of nutrients than the fruits or vegetables themselves.
